Dartmoor and Haytor

Looking upstream from many places in Shaldon and Ringmore, can be seen the magnificent view of Dartmoor with the famous Haytor – visible most of the year round except when fog descends on the higher levels of Dartmoor.
Haytor is probably one of the the most visited Tors on the moor as it is close to the road, and is easily found after leaving Shaldon via Bovey Tracey, and taking the B3387 that climbs up to reach the moor.

Shaldon is linked to Haytor by the Templar way. An 18 mile walk that follows the export route for granite taken from Dartmoor, passing along the Haytor Granite tramway, parts of which are still very visible, across the moor then the Stover canal, and passing through Newton Abbot towards Teignmouth and Shaldon where the granite ended up for export.
Nearby is the moor town of Bovey Tracey, and Widdicombe.

Shaldon zoo

Shaldon zoo offers a perfect place to visit for young and old alike. Set in around one acre of enclosed woodland the Trust is home to a unique collection of some of the world’s most endangered animals, many of which are not found in larger zoos. We have a family of pygmy marmosets, the world’s smallest monkey who live with our mouse-deer, the smallest hoofed animal. Other attractions include Marvin and Hope our well-known meerkats, our pair of beautiful ocelot cats from the Americas, three groups of lemurs which are only found on the island of Madagascar, free-roaming geckos and poison-dart frogs in the bug room and much more.

After visiting the Trust you can always go down the Smuggler’s tunnel which leads down to the secluded Ness Cove beach. We also run a Keeper for a Day Scheme which gives anyone over 14 the chance to roll up their sleeves and really get involved in the work of a keeper.
